Keys to Residential Lawn and Grounds Care in High Heat
When summer temperatures soar in Central Ohio, maintaining a healthy lawn and landscape becomes more challenging—but not impossible. With the right care and strategy, your yard can survive and even thrive through the heat of July and August. Here are the key factors to effective residential lawn and grounds care during extreme heat.
- Water Wisely, Not Excessively
In hot weather, deep and infrequent watering is more effective than daily shallow watering. Aim to water your lawn early in the morning (between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m.) to minimize evaporation and allow the grass to dry before evening, which helps prevent fungal disease. Your lawn typically needs about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. - Mow Smart
Raise your mower blade during summer months. Cutting grass too short can stress it further and expose the soil to more heat and moisture loss. Mowing at 3.5 to 4 inches allows for deeper root growth and helps shade the soil. Also, keep your mower blades sharp—dull blades tear grass, making it more vulnerable to heat and disease. - Mulch Beds to Retain Moisture
Adding a fresh layer of mulch (2–3 inches) in your garden beds insulates the soil, retains moisture, and suppresses weed growth. Mulch also improves soil health over time. Be sure not to pile mulch directly against plant stems or tree trunks to avoid rot and pest issues. - Weed and Pest Control
Heat-stressed plants are more vulnerable to pests and invasive weeds. Regular bed maintenance—including hand-pulling weeds, trimming overgrowth, and monitoring for signs of insect damage—can prevent problems from escalating. - Avoid Fertilizing in Extreme Heat
Fertilizing during high heat can burn grass and plant roots. If fertilization is needed, it should be done early in the season or delayed until temperatures cool. For mid-summer boosts, opt for slow-release, organic fertilizers and always water well afterward. - Know When to Call in the Pros
