Fall Lawn Care Checklist for Central Ohio Homeowners

As temperatures drop across Westerville, Dublin, Powell, and the rest of the Columbus metro area, your lawn is entering one of its most important stretches of the year. What you do in October has a direct effect on how your yard looks next spring. Here is a simple checklist to help you close out the season the right way.

  1. Keep Mowing, But Adjust Your Height

Grass does not stop growing just because the weather cools. Continue mowing through October, but raise your blade slightly for the final cuts of the season. Grass that is a bit longer heading into winter holds up better against frost and snow cover.

  1. Clear Leaves Regularly

A thick layer of wet leaves left on the lawn blocks sunlight and traps moisture, which can lead to mold and dead patches by spring. Rake or blow leaves off the lawn every week or two rather than waiting for all of them to fall at once.

  1. Apply a Fall Fertilizer Treatment

Fall is arguably the most important fertilization window of the year. A treatment rich in the right nutrients helps grass build strong root systems that carry it through winter dormancy and fuel faster green-up in spring. This is a good time to talk with a professional about a treatment plan built around Central Ohio soil and climate conditions.

  1. Aerate and Overseed Thin Areas

Clay-heavy Ohio soil compacts easily, which makes it harder for water and nutrients to reach the root zone. Aeration opens up that soil, and pairing it with overseeding fills in thin or bare patches while the cooler weather gives new seed a better chance to establish. We cover this in more depth in our post on why fall is the best time for aeration and overseeding.

  1. Check Your Irrigation System

Before the first hard freeze, your irrigation system needs to be shut down and blown out to prevent cracked pipes and damaged components. We will walk through this step by step in an upcoming post on winterizing your irrigation system, so keep an eye on our Insights page.

  1. Start Thinking About Snow

It feels early, but the property owners who line up their snow and ice removal plan in October are the ones who are never caught off guard by the first storm. We will dig into this more later this month.
